Matt Cardona Talks How He Has Capitalised On Success From Viral Deathmatch

AEW

Speaking with Kenny McIntosh for Issue 46 of Inside The Ropes Magazine, Matt Cardona discussed his deathmatch matches.

The former WWE star has been able to sell commemorative plaques from the bloody shirt he wore in the match against Deathmatch legend Nick Gage as part of the GCW Homecoming pay-per-view for thousands of dollars. He said,

“A lot of it is just gut instinct and not this calculated plan. For instance, with that initial death match with Nick Gage, I wore a white
t-shirt because I knew it would have a couple of trickles of blood. But because of how violent that match was, that shirt was maroon. I’m like, there’s something to this. I can’t just throw this away, no way. This is historic, at least to me.

I can’t sell a bloody shirt on eBay, that’s weird, right? So since I’m a diehard fan, I remembered those WrestleMania plaques that WWE makes where it’s the ring canvas, a nice signed 8×10 and a nice plaque. That’s what I did, I tracked down that exact company and I sent them my bloody t-shirt.

I told them what it was, I told them to wear gloves and they cut up my bloody shirt like it was like a ring canvas, a nice print of me with the title, made these plaques limited edition, I made over $20,000 off the shirt. Plus, all these toy companies have made toys based on this match.

So just one match that at the end of the day, was an independent show in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Let’s pretend it didn’t change my career and life, which it did, it made me over $30,000 on just merchandise that I was able to make from that match afterwards. Now, that’s an exception, right? That’s an extreme exception. But there’s always ways to capitalise on things.”
