The AEW World Championship was fiercely contested at AEW Dynasty, held at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, as Jon Moxley defended his title against Swerve Strickland. Swerve began the match with a strong offensive, but Moxley quickly turned the tide, throwing him from the top rope to the arena floor. The match escalated in brutality, with Swerve suffering a severe laceration, culminating in Moxley biting Swerve’s head. Swerve rallied, escaping a triangle choke with a powerful powerbomb, and followed with a series of suplexes for a near-fall. Moxley countered with a cutter, also for a two-count.
The match’s chaos intensified as Prince Nana attempted to intervene, only to be neutralized, and Moxley accidentally struck Marina with a cutter. Swerve responded with a DDT for another near-fall, and then delivered a devastating double foot stomp to Moxley off a ladder through a table. Moxley then inadvertently threw a chair into the referee’s face. Swerve followed with a powerslam. Hangman Page’s appearance was interrupted by the Death Riders, who were ultimately fought off by Page, who then delivered the Dead Eye to Moxley. Samoa Joe, Katsuyori Shibata, and HOOK entered the fray to even the odds. Swerve then executed a double foot stomp from the top rope onto Moxley. The Young Bucks emerged after the lights went out, delivering a double knee strike to Swerve, which allowed Moxley to capitalize and secure the victory, retaining his AEW World Championship.
