Lex Luger recently looked back on his historic WCW World Heavyweight Championship victory over Hulk Hogan on the August 4, 1997, episode of WCW Nitro. On his “Lex Expressed” podcast, Luger revealed that Hogan himself chose him to be the one to win the championship.
“I didn’t find out until I was almost ready to go to the ring. They asked Hulk, ‘Who do you want to do this with?’ … He [said], ‘100%, I want to do it with Lex.’”
Luger spoke about what that endorsement meant to him.
“That was a huge props from one of the biggest stars ever in the business. That was a great feeling, to come back and have the opportunity to rise to that level in the company again.”
Luger’s reign lasted five days before he lost the championship back to Hogan at the Road Wild pay-per-view.
