CM Punk On “Cult Of Personality”: “I Knew How Much Vince McMahon Hated To Pay For Licensed Music”

AEW

WWE superstar CM Punk has revealed the fascinating story behind how he was able to secure Living Colour’s iconic song, “Cult of Personality,” as his entrance theme in WWE. The song, which has become synonymous with Punk’s rebellious persona, has been a key part of his presentation throughout his career, including his recent run in AEW. However, as Punk explained in a new interview, getting Vince McMahon to pay for licensed music was a difficult and strategic negotiation tactic that he used to his advantage. His comments provide a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes power dynamics of WWE contract negotiations and highlight Punk’s cunning as a businessman.

Speaking with GQ in a fan Q&A, Punk detailed the moment he knew it was time to make “Cult of Personality” his official theme song.

“‘Cult of Personality’ is iconic. ‘This Fire Burns’ is also iconic, but come on, we’re talking about Living Color. Vernon Reid. This song’s been with me since 1989 when it came out and I was on a little league team, the Indians. I knew it was time to make ‘Cult of Personality’ my official theme song in WWE when I was renegotiating my contract and I knew how much Vince McMahon hated to pay for licensed music. I said, ‘Guess what, pal? The only way I’m re-signing is if I get this song.’ I thought he was going to say ‘no’ and I was going to peace out and go on vacation, and he said ‘yes,’ and now here I am.“

The demand for a licensed song was a bold move by Punk, as Vince McMahon was notoriously frugal when it came to paying for music rights. This strategic play not only secured Punk his preferred theme but also demonstrated his leverage and unique position within the company at the time.
