John Cena learned many lessons from the old guard, including why they chose to drink bourbon.
On What Do You Wanna Talk About? with Cody Rhodes, Cena recalled asking The Undertaker about the backstage tradition.
“He said, ‘Because it’s hard.’ No kidding. ‘And we gargle it because it’s difficult,’” Cena shared.
He explained that the ritual was a test of toughness and trustworthiness in a difficult business.
“It was a metric of among many, can you take a rib? Like can you do the hard stuff?… So my takeaway from that was ‘Don’t be afraid to do hard shit.’”
However, Cena noted that he would prefer to enjoy the brotherhood without the hazing aspect.
“Why do we gotta drink it all at once? Pour me something, let’s sip on it and let’s have a conversation. Let’s grow and learn.”
