Kenny Omega made a high-profile appearance at Sumo Hall in Japan on Wednesday, but it wasn’t for a match. The former AEW World Champion took center stage at Capcom Cup 12 to help launch the latest addition to the Street Fighter 6 roster, appearing in full costume as the character Alex.
Bringing Alex to Life Through Motion Capture
The official Street Fighter social media accounts confirmed that Omega has worked closely with Capcom for several years to bring the character to life. Omega provided the motion capture for Alex, meaning many of the character’s signature moves and taunts in the game will directly mirror the “Best Bout Machine.” Alex is scheduled for official release in the game on March 17.
However, this appearance carries significant implications for AEW’s upcoming premium live event. Because Omega is contractually obligated to be in Tokyo for the Capcom Cup from March 11–15, he will be absent from tonight’s Dynamite and Collision tapings in San Jose. Furthermore, it is now confirmed that Omega will miss this Sunday’s AEW Revolution pay-per-view in Los Angeles.
Reports indicate that Omega was hesitant to engage in a long-term build with Swerve Strickland leading into the show, knowing his status was in doubt due to the Japan trip. The two eventually settled their differences on the February 18 episode of Dynamite, where Strickland secured a victory. Despite Omega’s absence, Strickland remains scheduled for action this Sunday at the Crypto.com Arena, where he will face off against the formidable Brody King.
For the past few years, we’ve worked closely with @KennyOmegamanX on bringing Alex to life and we want to thank him for being at Capcom Cup 12!
