Jamie Hayter has never been one to shy away from the hard truths of the professional wrestling industry. In a recent interview with Soundsphere Magazine, the 30-year-old British standout reflected on the current state of women’s wrestling, acknowledging the progress made while emphasizing the significant hurdles that remain.
Wrestling Under the Microscope
Hayter pointed out that despite the increased opportunities and visibility for women in major promotions, the level of scrutiny they face remains disproportionately high. “I feel like as a woman, we are probably under the microscope a lot more than men are,” Hayter observed. “If you have a bad match, then it’s like ‘Oh my god, you’re the worst wrestler ever’. Whereas a guy could have a bad match and it’s like, ‘Oh well’.”
The former World Champion also noted that physical appearance continues to be a factor in how women are received by certain segments of the audience. “If you don’t look a certain way, then they don’t like that either,” she stated. While she admitted there have been positive changes driven by the hard work of the athletes, Hayter was careful not to label the current environment as “great” just yet. “There’s just so much more work that can be done… there’s still stuff to be done.”
Currently, Hayter is focused on her successful tag-team partnership with Alex Windsor. Operating as The Brawling Birds, the duo has quickly established themselves as a dominant force in AEW. Most recently, they secured a decisive and high-profile victory over The IInspiration (Cassie Lee and Jessie McKay) during their Dynamite debut on March 4. As Hayter continues to lead by example in the ring, her call for a more equitable and professional standard for all wrestlers continues to resonate throughout the industry.
