For Jon Moxley, the AEW Continental Championship is more than hardware. It is an extension of everything he stands for — and he’s not shy about explaining why.
Speaking with Renee Paquette on Close-Up ahead of his no-time-limit rematch against Konosuke Takeshita at AEW Revolution, Moxley reflected on what it meant to win the Continental Classic at AEW Worlds End and emerge as champion. “On the one hand, it’s external. It’s a belt, it’s a trophy… On the other hand, what I went through in the Continental Classic — the effort, everybody else, all the other competitors scratching and clawing to get to the top of this mountain — it really does mean something. It’s part of my identity. It’s not a belt you put on, it’s not a trophy you hold up. It’s an identity, and you either are it or you’re not.”
Moxley Driven by Unlocking Potential — His Own and Others’
Moxley described his mission in AEW as one rooted in helping those around him reach their ceiling while refusing to accept that he has reached his own. “I am not at my peak yet. Hundreds of times people have wanted to write me off, going back decades. There’s still a whole other level that exists that I can reach. Every time that I think I get really good, I look back years later and go, ‘Actually, I sucked at that point.’ There’s always another door.”
He spoke candidly about the physical toll of 22 years in professional wrestling, crediting relentless maintenance for keeping him in fighting shape. “Most wrestlers, nine out of 10, if they spent 24 hours a day in my body, they would just quit.” Moxley defends the Continental Championship against Takeshita tonight at Revolution, with no time limit — meaning someone must be pinned or submitted to end it.
