Dave Meltzer has weighed in on the criticism surrounding John Cena’s announcement as WrestleMania 42 host, defending the decision while acknowledging that WWE‘s ongoing ticket sales challenges played a role in the timing. Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer pushed back against fans accusing WWE of desperation while putting the move in straightforward business context.
“I’m sure that the fact that ticket sales are low played a part in this, but like, it’s not cheating to put him on the card. If your ticket sales are low, it’s kind of what you do. That’s kind of pro wrestling,” Meltzer said. He also addressed criticism that Cena is violating a retirement stipulation by appearing. “The idea that he’s violating a retirement stipulation by making an appearance is total bull**** because he’s not wrestling on the show.”
WrestleMania 42 Ticket Sales Currently Down 19.6% From WrestleMania 41’s Pace at Same Point Last Year
Despite the Cena announcement and multiple discount sales in recent weeks, Meltzer reported that WrestleMania 42 ticket sales are currently down 19.6% from where they stood at the same point last year for WrestleMania 41 — which was also held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Both Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez suggested WWE waited too long to reduce ticket prices, limiting the impact of the discounts. Meltzer predicted WWE will ultimately fill the building regardless, potentially busing in people if necessary, and will announce an attendance figure comparable to last year. He also noted that on paper, both nights of WrestleMania 42 look strong creatively, and that Cena “fits the bill” as host and will likely also be involved in a future Hall of Fame appearance.
