MJF has revealed he has pitched the idea of a Wednesday Night Wars documentary to AEW President Tony Khan — and his case for why it should happen is difficult to argue with. Speaking on Late Night Grin, Friedman pointed to the unique position AEW now finds itself in, with several talents who competed on the WWE NXT side of the Wednesday Night Wars now working in AEW.
“We literally won and we have guys that work in our company now that were on the other side. It would be f***ing sick. You can sit down Adam Cole and Roderick Strong, Kyle O’Reilly and Swerve — all these guys that were on the other side of the war,” MJF said, adding Bobby Fish’s infamous quote with characteristic self-awareness: “You can’t sit down Bobby Fish unfortunately — I mean folks, where’s the lie?”
The Wednesday Night Wars Saw AEW Dominate NXT in the Ratings Before WWE Moved NXT to Tuesdays
The Wednesday Night Wars began when WWE moved NXT to the USA Network to compete head-to-head with AEW Dynamite on TNT — announced just months before Dynamite’s debut. On the first night of competition, Dynamite drew 1.4 million viewers compared to NXT’s 891,000, and AEW won most weeks of the head-to-head period. WWE eventually moved NXT to Tuesday nights in 2021, effectively ending the war. The documentary pitch has obvious appeal given how many of the key figures are now under the same AEW roof.
