Dwayne Johnson is bringing the story of WWE‘s Paige back to life in a new format — a stage musical adaptation of the 2019 film Fighting With My Family. Reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson will team with director Stephen Merchant through his Seven Bucks Productions company to develop the project, with Merchant revealing he always viewed the material as naturally suited to the musical format.
“A young woman from the ‘chorus line’ fighting to get her big break, surrounded by theatrical, larger-than-life characters and huge sweeping emotions. I approached each wrestling match like it was a different dance number, building to a big show-stopping finale. Seeing the film reimagined for the stage feels like the natural next step,” Merchant said. Johnson added his own endorsement of the project. “Fighting With My Family is exceptionally well-suited for the stage. It’s packed with personal emotion expressed through the dynamic world of wrestling, which has always been about storytelling and connecting with a live audience. Working with Stephen Merchant on the film was a truly special experience, and his brilliant work deserves this new act.” The original film starred Florence Pugh as Paige and remains one of the most acclaimed WWE Studios productions ever made. The announcement comes just days after Paige made her stunning return to WWE at WrestleMania 42, where she won the Women’s Tag Team Championships alongside Brie Bella.
