Released by WWE on April 24, Santos Escobar is expected to become a free agent in the coming months — and his earlier conversations with CMLL are reportedly set to pick back up. Before re-signing with WWE, Escobar had been expected to join the top Mexican promotion and possibly make AEW appearances, according to Fightful Select.
WWE made what sources called a “great offer” to retain him, despite his contract being too costly for the company to bench him. He still ended up sidelined in WWE, working primarily with AAA. He was backstage at least once for a main roster event. After appearing at AAA Rey de Reyes 2026, Escobar revealed he had undergone triceps surgery.
WWE expects him to be close to recovered by the time his 90-day no-compete clause expires. While he was initially told he could use the WWE Performance Center for rehab, Fightful Select confirmed that arrangement is no longer in place.
