On the latest episode of 83 Weeks, Eric Bischoff revisited the immediate creative confusion the nWo invasion caused inside WCW, recalling a constructive conversation with Sting in the days after Scott Hall arrived. You can check out his comments below:
“It’s also what made it very difficult. When Scott Hall came down — May 27, 1996, I remember, because it was my birthday — it was either that night or the following week when Sting approached me. Sting and I would often have very productive conversations if we saw things differently, but it was always super constructive, with the idea in mind of let’s come up with a better idea or a solution. I’m taking extra care to make sure no one conjures up in their own mind that it was an adversarial type of conversation, because it wasn’t. But I remember Sting coming to me in a very honest way, saying, how do we sell for them? How do we get the crowd behind us if they’re behind them? So it did create a lot of confusion. In the long run, that was good confusion — it created controversy, and we know how that went. But it did change the psychology. When guys were laying out matches and they see they’re working with the nWo, and they see how the crowd is reacting to the nWo, all of that throws the psychology of what typically goes into a match completely out the door. You’re winging it at that point, because you’ve never done that before. We were asking babyfaces to react to the nWo in a way that was very, very difficult for many of them.”
