“You know what comes to mind right out of the gate? Will you remember Gunther Aldis, Gunther Cena, Gunther AJ? Which one will you remember? Take you out of the equation, the WWE universe, what resonated more, do you think, from an emotional point of view? And Gunther got his hand raised in all three.”
On the moment landing beyond expectations:
“Who in the hell would have ever thought Nick Aldis versus Gunther would have even been on Saturday Night’s Main Event, let alone SummerSlam in a marquee match, and the people gave him a standing ovation, and Mickie got in the ring, and Donovan got in the ring? I’m a OG Nick guy from way, way back, but that to me is the art of the story, and none of it surprised me.”
On Aldis elevating Gunther:
“I don’t want to say the word heat, but the emotional connection. I believe that Gunther-Nick did more for Gunther than Gunther did, because the people were so into that, and they were emotionally connected. That son of a bitch, Gunther, may sound crazy. Gunther got the rub from Nick.”
On whether Aldis should chase more matches or stay in the GM role:
“To me, it’s an absolute no brainer. Don’t take yourself out of the game of building your brand. If you’re in the creative room and you are stuck for a main event, you go, why don’t they make Nick Aldis special referee for this SmackDown’s main event? Great idea. Then bring him back in the babyface’s corner next week. The stories will write itself. He’ll be right back in the ring before you know it.”
