Some people in WWE were against Sami Zayn regaining the Undisputed WWE Championship on SmackDown, according to Dave Meltzer.
Zayn beat CM Punk in Mexico City on September 11 in a match involving interference from Kevin Owens, Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae. Zayn hit Punk with the title while the referee checked on Gargano, then followed with a Helluva Kick.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer said the switch was down to storyline plans.
“With the Sami Zayn thing, the basic gist was they have a storyline that will make sense when you look back on it, is what I was told. When it’s all said and done this will all make sense. There was certainly people who were against it but they did it. And that was that,” Meltzer said.
Zayn is now a two-time Undisputed WWE Champion. His first reign lasted nine days, starting at Night of Champions and ending when Punk beat him on the July 6 RAW in Punk’s return match.
