Top NJPW Star Is Working Without A Contract

Tetsuya Naito’s Freelance Future: NJPW Talks Continue Amidst Retirement Speculation

Tetsuya Naito, a prominent figure in New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), continues to compete for the promotion despite his contract expiring on January 31st. This has led to Naito working as a freelancer, a unique situation for a performer of his stature within NJPW. However, news reports indicate that NJPW remains Naito’s primary professional focus, with ongoing negotiations regarding a potential new contract.

Naito’s comments to Tokyo Sports shed light on his current mindset, revealing a reflective approach to his career. He acknowledged the physical toll wrestling has taken, stating, “I can’t do things now that I was able to do a few years ago because of my physical decline. I really feel that the time I have left is limited.” This suggests that retirement is a consideration, albeit one he has yet to firmly decide upon.

Further emphasizing his introspective stance, Naito expressed a desire to prioritize his personal fulfillment in his remaining years in wrestling. He stated, “rather than continuing with some weird dissatisfaction, I feel like it might be better to just do things the way I want to.” This statement reflects a determination to maintain creative control and personal enjoyment in his career. His decision regarding a new NJPW contract hinges on his current feelings. He said “I haven’t decided whether to sign or not, but if I feel like, ‘OK, I’ll be in the New Japan ring for another year,’ I’ll sign, but if I have doubts I won’t.” Naito’s approach, marked by his signature “Tranquilo” philosophy, highlights his intent to navigate his future on his own terms.
