New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) has officially announced that veteran powerhouse Tomohiro Ishii has suffered a neck injury and will be forced to miss the entirety of the highly anticipated New Japan Cup tour.
“The Stone Pitbull” Replaced by a Familiar Veteran
Ishii, affectionately known by fans globally as “The Stone Pitbull,” was originally slated to enter the prestigious single-elimination tournament with a distinct advantage. Having received a first-round bye, he was scheduled to face the winner of the opening-round matchup between Ren Narita and Taichi in the second round. Neck injuries are treated with the utmost seriousness in Japanese wrestling, and NJPW management quickly moved to adjust the brackets to ensure the tournament proceeds smoothly.
In a statement released to the public, NJPW confirmed the medical situation: “Tomohiro Ishii, who was scheduled to wrestle in the New Japan Cup this month after a first round bye, has sustained a neck injury and will be absent for the duration of the tour. We apologise to fans looking forward to seeing Ishii wrestle and appreciate your understanding.”
To fill the sudden vacancy, NJPW has called upon dependable veteran Satoshi Kojima. The multi-time champion will seamlessly substitute for Ishii in the tournament bracket, stepping up to face the victor of the Narita versus Taichi bout in round two on March 12 in Takamatsu. NJPW has not provided a specific timeline for Ishii’s recovery, noting only that they join the fans in wishing him a speedy and full rehabilitation. Ishii’s most recent in-ring appearance occurred at the NJPW New Beginning USA event, where he lost the NJPW Strong Openweight Title to Oleg Boltin in a hard-hitting contest.
