Paul Wight said wrestlers who get upset about losing matches are fighting the wrong battle.
Speaking on the Inside the Ring podcast, Wight said talent should focus on being on time, staying dependable, and keeping their word rather than arguing creative decisions about who wins and loses. He said refusing to lose made more sense decades ago, when wrestlers owned their names and built them across territories, than it does now, when most work as characters owned by their companies.
Wight recalled seeking out The Undertaker for feedback after a match early in his career and hoping for praise. Instead, The Undertaker told him to take three weeks off and quit the business, then walked away. Wight said he now understands the point: young wrestlers have to learn to help themselves rather than expect guidance from veterans.
He also compared generations, saying today’s talent is softer, though not necessarily worse for it. Many older wrestlers cared only about themselves and their money, he said, while the current generation can get so excited about being on television that they undervalue what they should be earning. He said rougher locker rooms and backstage rib wars were part of why Vince McMahon kept his distance from talent.
