Ricky Starks Was Denied Request For AEW Release

Ricky Starks, once considered one of AEW’s most promising young stars, is reportedly seeking a way out of the company after being absent from programming for nearly a year. According to Ibou of WrestlePurists, Starks has previously asked for his AEW release, but Tony Khan has reportedly declined the request, leaving Starks with no choice but to wait out the remainder of his contract.

Starks last appeared on AEW programming in March 2024 and has publicly expressed frustration over not being used, stating that he doesn’t understand why he’s been sidelined. Despite the lack of clarity regarding his absence, Starks has remained active on the independent wrestling scene, working for promotions such as Glory Pro WrestlePocalypse and House of Glory (HOG) to keep his name relevant.

Reasons Behind Starks’ Situation

While the specific details of Starks’ issues with AEW reportedly remain under wraps, multiple factors appear to have contributed to the strained relationship:

  • Creative Stagnation: Starks was gaining significant momentum in AEW in 2022 and 2023, including a high-profile feud with MJF. However, his booking cooled off, leaving fans wondering why one of AEW’s most charismatic performers wasn’t being utilized in meaningful storylines.
  • Internal Issues: Ibou’s report mentions that “several things” led to Starks’ situation, though most of these details “will never be reported.” This suggests potential behind-the-scenes disagreements or other undisclosed issues between Starks and AEW management.

Tony Khan Denies Release Ricky Starks’ Request

It’s no secret that Tony Khan has taken a firm stance on releasing talent who wish to leave AEW. In the past, stars like Malakai Black and Andrade El Idolo reportedly sought releases but were instead kept under contract. Khan’s decision to hold Starks to his contract could be an attempt to avoid strengthening WWE’s roster, especially given Starks’ growing appeal.
