AEW star Josh Alexander shared that his recent impactful debut as the “Wild Card” opponent for “Hangman” Adam Page in the Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament on AEW Dynamite was a complete surprise to him until he arrived at the arena. Speaking on the “Battleground Podcast,” Alexander detailed the secrecy surrounding his first AEW match last month.
Alexander explained he had minimal information beforehand. “I knew I was traveling to Boston, I did not know I was facing Hangman Adam Page. I did not know I was the wild card,” he revealed. “There was a possibility that it could have been a swerve, you’re making assumptions, but radio silence from everybody. Here’s your travel, here’s your hotel.”
The reality of his role only became clear upon reaching the venue. “When I found out I was a wild card, when I arrived at the building, they snuck me in and hid me in a room and stuff like that,” Alexander said, adding, “I was like, I’ve already gone through these feelings of these possibilities of what I’m going to be doing.”
Despite the last-minute nature of the reveal, Alexander put on a competitive match, though “Hangman” Page ultimately defeated him to advance in the tournament. His comments provide a fascinating glimpse into AEW’s methods for maintaining the element of surprise for significant debuts.
