AEW and its World Champion Jon Moxley are being sued for negligence and civil assault and battery, according to a report from Sports Illustrated. The civil lawsuit was filed on May 30 in Wayne County Circuit Court by Christopher Dispensa, a production crew member who alleges he was injured by Moxley during a 2023 episode of AEW Dynamite.
Dispensa claims that during a cage match between Moxley and Kenny Omega on May 10, 2023, Moxley went “off-script” and shoved him to the ground. He alleges this caused severe neck and shoulder injuries that required multiple surgeries. The lawsuit also claims Moxley has a “history of disciplinary issues.”
Sources within AEW reportedly dispute this characterization, calling Moxley a respected “locker room leader.”
The lawsuit accuses Moxley of assault and AEW of gross negligence in failing to protect production staff and in its hiring and training of Moxley. Dispensa is seeking compensation exceeding $25,000 for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
An AEW spokesperson declined to comment on the pending litigation. A status conference for the case is scheduled for August 29.
