Sting Recalls “Special” And Rare Match Against Antonio Inoki

Wrestling legend and WWE Hall of Famer Sting recently looked back on his illustrious career, singling out a very specific and rare match as one of his most special memories. While he has had countless iconic moments and matches against some of the biggest names in the history of the sport, one encounter from his time in Japan stands out as a point of “serious bragging rights” for “The Icon.” During a recent interview with Justin Dhillon on the “Casual Conversations With the Classic” podcast, Sting was asked about his fondest memories of wrestling in Japan, a country where he became a major star. While his legendary series of matches with The Great Muta are often the first to be mentioned, Sting highlighted a different, even more legendary opponent.

His feud and partnership with The Great Muta produced some of the most memorable moments of his WCW and international career, but it was a one-on-one bout against the founder of New Japan Pro-Wrestling that he holds in the highest regard.

“I mean, probably every match that I had with Muta. One in particular that’s going to be special, no matter what, gives me serious bragging rights, is that I wrestled Antonio Inoki. Not many people can say that.”

The historic match took place in January of 1995 at the Tokyo Dome. Sting faced the legendary Antonio Inoki in the finals of the BVD Cup Martial Arts Tournament. Inoki was victorious in the contest.
