AEW star Kris Statlander has a clear vision for the future of the women’s division, and it includes more championships and more high-stakes, hardcore-style matches. In two separate recent interviews, the former TBS Champion expressed her desire to see the women’s roster get more opportunities to shine, specifically by introducing Women’s Tag Team Championships and being included in signature AEW matches like Blood & Guts. Statlander, who is scheduled to compete for the AEW Women’s World Championship at the upcoming All Out pay-per-view, believes the division is more than ready for these new challenges.
Speaking with Fightful’s Grapsody podcast, Statlander made the case for creating AEW Women’s Tag Team Championships.
“I would love that. We’ve had some success, Harley and I as a team. So maybe there’s a good chance somewhere in there for that. But also one of my trainers was a tag team champion. So kind of tag team wrestling is something that I am very fond of, and just something that was very heavily implemented in us when we were training, on how to have good tag matches and stuff. So it’s been very nice to kind of almost like give a tribute to the people that trained me in a way. I’ve stolen some of my trainer’s stuff. Actually, I do it with Harley, and it’s been nice to kind of honor them in that way for showing me the proper way to do a tag match… Also, every opportunity to win a belt is also every opportunity for someone to be your opponent and to hate you and to want to take you out. So, great, but also watch your back, everybody, because people love to fight for gold.”
In a separate interview with Sports Illustrated, she talked about wanting the division to have more intense, story-concluding matches.
“I want to see more things that people get so invested in that they want to see us at the top of the card every single night… People are more invested in the women’s division than they ever have been before. And [I want] more big blow-off matches and more street fights. Why not? The girls love to go nuts. The girls love going crazy. More street fights, tag titles, blood and guts, maybe mixed tag stuff more often, stuff like that. I agree with all of those things.”
