In a dramatic and bloody main event, the legendary Místico defeated Maxwell Jacob Friedman at the CMLL 92nd Anniversary show on Friday night to win the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship. The high-stakes “Lucha de Apuestas” match saw Místico put his iconic mask on the line against MJF’s championship. The victory for the lucha libre icon brought a satisfying conclusion to a months-long, international feud that saw the arrogant AEW star disrespect the traditions of CMLL. The event, which emanated from the historic Arena Mexico in Mexico City, was a major success for the promotion.
The match was an intense and violent brawl from the start. MJF immediately went after Místico’s mask, tearing it open and causing the legend to bleed heavily. The bout also featured interference from MJF’s cornerman, Jon Cruz, but Templario came down to ringside to even the odds. The finish of the match saw Místico hit a superkick on Cruz, knocking him off the apron, before locking MJF in his signature submission hold, La Mística. While the former AEW World Champion attempted to fight out of the hold, he was ultimately forced to submit, ending his championship reign.
The feud began at AEW’s Grand Slam Mexico event, where MJF defeated Místico by disqualification and stole his mask. MJF then began appearing in CMLL, winning the Light Heavyweight Championship and defending it, all while continuing to mock his opponent. Following his loss, MJF took to social media to state that he would be taking his frustrations out on his opponent at tonight’s AEW All Out pay-per-view, Mark Briscoe.
