AEW star Anthony Bowens recently opened up about his decision to sign with All Elite Wrestling in 2020, revealing that the company’s visible and supportive representation of LGBTQ+ talent was a major contributing factor. Bowens, who is a former AEW World Tag Team and Trios Champion as one half of The Acclaimed, has become a prominent and inspirational figure for many fans. In a new interview, he reflected on the lack of representation he saw when he was growing up as a wrestling fan and the importance of being able to live his dream authentically while positively impacting others. His comments highlight the inclusive and judgment-free environment that he found in the AEW locker room from his very first day with the company.
Speaking with Jimmy V3, Bowens discussed his journey and what it means to be a role model for others.
“I didn’t have much representation when I was growing up watching wrestling. I mean, there was maybe one, two, if that. But it’s really cool to be able to live my dream and also have people relate to your story and have people relate to your journey and know that you’re impacting folks positively just by living your dream.”
He then explained how the presence of other openly LGBTQ+ wrestlers in AEW made him feel comfortable and welcome from the start.
“It’s been great working at AEW because I always feel free to be myself. It was never a worry. As a matter of fact, that was one of the contributing factors to coming here in the first place was when I was first a extra here, I just noticed people like Sonny Kiss and Nyla Rose walking around not worrying about anything, judgment-free. being able to live their lives normally like everything should be. So it’s a great environment to work in, an environment where I’ve always been able to be myself, which I’m super grateful for.”
