AEW President Tony Khan has provided a sobering update on the injury status of “The Golden Star” Kota Ibushi, revealing that the Japanese wrestling legend suffered a broken femur during his match on Saturday’s episode of AEW Collision. The injury occurred during Ibushi’s singles match against Josh Alexander, which was taped on Wednesday at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida. The news is a devastating blow for Ibushi, who had only recently returned to the ring after a long layoff due to diverticulitis. The severe nature of the injury will require surgery and will sideline him for an extended period, significantly impacting his planned matches and storylines.
Khan took to social media to express his gratitude for Ibushi and provide details on the injury.
“We are all very grateful for The Golden Star @ibushi_kota. In my opinion, he’s one of the greatest wrestlers that I’ve ever seen. He is adored by the AEW locker room + fans worldwide. We wish him the best as he recovers from the leg injury he suffered on #AEWCollision tonight!”
The injury reportedly took place when Josh Alexander had Ibushi on his shoulders near the top rope. Ibushi appeared to lose his balance, and both men fell out of the ring. Ibushi was unable to move after the fall and subsequently lost the match via count-out. After the match was called, Mark Davis made his return and briefly attacked Ibushi before Kenny Omega ran down to fight off The Don Callis Family and tend to his injured friend. The severity of the injury means that Ibushi will be out of action for a considerable amount of time, and his future in AEW is now uncertain.
