AEW President Tony Khan has revealed that the upcoming AEW Women’s World Championship match between Kris Statlander and “Timeless” Toni Storm at WrestleDream is a first-time-ever one-on-one encounter “by design.” The two top stars have been on a collision course for months, and Khan explained that he has been intentionally holding off on their first singles match, waiting for the perfect moment to present what he believes will be one of the biggest matches the company can offer. Their feud has been a central focus of the women’s division, and the anticipation for their first one-on-one bout is at an all-time high.
Speaking on the AEW WrestleDream media call, Khan discussed the long-term booking of the championship match.
“We’ve got another great former World Champion, Timeless Toni Storm, taking on the AEW World Champion Kris Statlander. That is the first time they’ve ever wrestled one-on-one, and it is by design. That has always been a match that I knew would be a major match on a major event, and when the time was right, it would be one of the biggest matches I think we could put on, and I’m really excited for it. I think they’ve been doing fantastic work in the promos.”
The final build for the match took place on this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, where the two had a final, intense confrontation that ended with a surprising show of mutual respect, as both women refused an opportunity to use the championship belt as a weapon. Kris Statlander will defend the AEW Women’s World Championship against Toni Storm this Saturday, October 18, at the AEW WrestleDream pay-per-view in St. Louis.
