Darby Allin has vanquished his rival Jon Moxley, but he did not do it alone. The main event of AEW WrestleDream from St. Louis, Missouri, saw the shocking and unexpected return of the legendary Sting, who emerged to help his former protégé, Darby Allin, win a brutal “I Quit” match. The match was a gruesome and violent spectacle that pushed both men to their absolute limits, and the return of “The Icon,” who was wearing new white face paint and sporting a long white beard, provided a stunning conclusion to the pay-per-view.
The match, which was the main event of the evening, was a bloody brawl from the opening bell. Moxley dominated the early portion of the match, brutalizing Allin in sadistic fashion. He shoved skewers under Darby’s fingernails and stomped his hand on a steel chair. Moxley’s allies in the Death Riders (referred to as the Death Triangle in the transcript) also interfered, with Claudio Castagnoli heaving Allin over the top rope and through the announce table at ringside. Moxley then put Allin through two more tables with a Death Rider on the coffin that had been brought to ringside.
The most dramatic moment came when the Death Riders filled a fish tank with water in the middle of the ring, and Moxley proceeded to hold Darby Allin’s head under the water, attempting to drown him. As Allin was fading, the lights in the arena suddenly went out. When they came back on, Sting was in the ring with his signature baseball bat. He attacked the Death Riders, choking Jon Moxley with the bat and fighting off the other members, even carrying Marina Shafir away from the ring. This allowed Darby Allin to recover, hit Moxley with the bat, a neckbreaker, and a Coffin Drop. Allin then locked Moxley in the Scorpion Death Lock, finally forcing the leader of the Death Riders to say the words “I Quit” to end the match.
Sting’s return marks his first appearance since his retirement match at AEW Revolution 2024, where he and Allin successfully defended the AEW World Tag Team Championships.
