AEW Women’s World Champion Kris Statlander has revealed her reasoning for turning down the recent recruitment attempts by the dominant and villainous Death Riders faction. In recent weeks, members of the group, particularly Wheeler Yuta, have been trying to persuade Statlander to join their ranks. However, Statlander has emphatically rejected their advances, most notably by hitting Yuta with a lariat on a recent episode of Dynamite. In a new interview, she explained that her past experiences with being in groups and letting others guide her career have not worked out, and she is now determined to succeed on her own terms. Her decision to stand against the group solidifies her as one of the top babyfaces in the company.
Speaking with Lyric Swinton of Sports Illustrated, Statlander elaborated on her decision to turn down the offer from Jon Moxley’s faction.
“I’m not quite sure exactly what they were trying to accomplish, and I think that’s why I was very hesitant to participate in their shenanigans. Because they kind of just come at you with whatever they choose, and they just expect you to conform or follow along with what they are doing, and that’s not really how I roll, I would say. I’ve been down the path of letting someone else tell me what to do and letting someone else kind of try and guide me, and it ended up not working out with me, and I don’t want to go through that again. They have been terrorizing everyone in AEW for quite some time now, and I try to find a way to see if maybe I can kind of play their game a little bit and maybe I can get a little more information on how to take them down.”
Statlander is set to defend her AEW Women’s World Championship against “Timeless” Toni Storm at the AEW WrestleDream pay-per-view this Saturday, October 18.
