Kris Statlander Crashes Mercedes Moné’s “12 Belts Celebration” On Dynamite

AEW

The October 22 episode of AEW Dynamite featured a “12 Belts Celebration” for the historic AEW TBS Champion, Mercedes Moné, but the segment ended in chaos and set the stage for two massive new storylines in the women’s division. The celebration was intended to honor Moné, who recently broke the modern record for most concurrent championships held after winning her 12th title over the weekend in Winnipeg. However, Moné’s night of honor was first ruined by the AEW Women’s World Champion, Kris Statlander, and then salvaged by the surprise return of the ROH Women’s World Champion, Athena.

The segment began with Renee Paquette and a puppet version of Mercedes, “Mini Mone,” hosting the in-ring celebration. After some bragging from “The CEO,” the segment took a turn when “Mini Mone” began to mock her, leading Moné to angrily dunk the puppet’s head into a large celebration cake. This brought out Harley Cameron, but the real shock came moments later when Kris Statlander emerged from under the table, much to the surprise of everyone. Statlander, who had a heated confrontation with Moné at the WrestleDream pay-per-view, attacked the TBS Champion and slammed her through the celebration table and into the cake, getting a huge reaction from the San Antonio crowd.

Later in the show, a furious and cake-covered Mercedes Moné was seen fuming backstage. She was then confronted by the returning “Fallen Goddess,” Athena. The long-reigning ROH Women’s World Champion, making her first appearance on AEW programming in months, proposed an offer that Moné “couldn’t refuse.” Athena suggested that the two dominant champions team up to pursue the inaugural AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championships, which were also announced on the show. Intrigued by the allure of winning a 13th championship, Moné accepted the offer, and Athena pulled her away to begin “minion training.”

The night of chaos has now set up two major matches for the future. First, the super-team of Mercedes Moné and Athena will be a formidable force in the upcoming tag team tournament. Second, it was confirmed on the broadcast that the personal rivalry between Moné and Kris Statlander will culminate in a massive “Champion vs. Champion” match at the AEW Full Gear pay-per-view in November, where Statlander will defend her AEW Women’s World Championship against the TBS Champion.
