A new report from Fightful Select’s weekly Q&A has provided more backstage details on the recent contract negotiations for The New Day’s Xavier Woods. As was reported earlier this month, Woods signed a new multi-year deal with WWE, which he later confirmed on his social media. The initial report noted that the talks “came down to the wire,” and this new update provides more context on the situation. According to sources, Woods’s previous contract was set to expire at the end of September, and the new agreement was only finalized as that deadline approached.
The report indicates that Woods was in a strong negotiating position. While he reportedly wanted to stay with WWE, he was “in a position where he didn’t have to compromise” and was prepared to do what was best for himself. This suggests Woods was aware of his value to the company, both as a multi-time champion and as the host of the highly successful UpUpDownDown gaming channel. The report also notes that there was no word of any conversations taking place with AEW.
This contrasts with the negotiations for his New Day partner, Kofi Kingston, who also re-signed with the company earlier this year. The report stated that “little was heard” about Kingston’s contract talks, suggesting they were a much smoother process. Woods, a 13-time Tag Team Champion, has been with WWE since 2010. He and Kingston are currently active on the Raw brand, while their partner Big E continues to recover from a serious neck injury.
