Update On WBD Sale And The Future Of AEW

AEW

A new update has emerged regarding the potential sale of AEW’s broadcast partner, Warner Bros. Discovery. The situation, which has seen WBD reject multiple bids from Paramount Skydance, continues to be a major topic of discussion as Netflix and NBCUniversal/Comcast are also reportedly exploring bids.

A new Fightful Select Q&A provided speculation on the future of AEW if a sale occurs. Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful speculated that Paramount is still the most likely company to acquire WBD. In that scenario, he noted that AEW has a “good contract” with WBD and is considered a strong streaming property that “performs solid numbers” relative to the cost of its deal. AEW’s current multi-year deal with WBD is valued at upwards of $150 million per year.

The report also addressed the “interesting” hypothetical of Netflix acquiring WBD. In that case, Sapp predicted that AEW’s current contract would be retained, despite Netflix also being the new streaming home for WWE Monday Night Raw in the U.S. and all WWE content internationally. Sapp does not believe WWE would “leave a trail” of attempting to get Netflix to drop AEW, especially in light of the recent antitrust lawsuit filed by MLW, which was settled in December 2023.

According to a separate report from CNBC, WBD is expected to publicly announce its future plans—whether it be a sale or a company split—by the middle or end of December 2025.
