Tony Khan Addresses NWA Pushback Over New AEW National Title

AEW President Tony Khan has publicly addressed the recent pushback from the NWA regarding the creation of the new “AEW National Championship”. After the announcement, wrestlers from the NWA—which has its own historic National Championship—publicly commented on the new title, with NWA champion Mike Mondo stating there is “only one PRESTIGIOUS National Championship”.

In a new video posted to social media, Khan confirmed he “had a nice conversation about it” with NWA President Billy Corgan.

“I ended up having a nice conversation about it with the President of the NWA, Billy Corgan. Because of course, the NWA National Championship has a great history of its own. And when we created a National Champions, I saw NWA wrestlers saying, ‘Hey, we have a National Title.’ Well, AEW is a separate company, we have our own lineage”.

Khan added that he has “a lot of respect” for Corgan and the NWA’s traditions and that it “was good for him to hear this”. The inaugural AEW National Champion will be crowned in a Casino Gauntlet match at Full Gear.
