In a rare joint interview, AJ Lee and Stephanie McMahon have opened up about their tense public exchange from February 2015. At the time, Lee famously responded to a tweet from McMahon supporting equal pay by pointing out the pay disparity for WWE’s female talent, despite their high merchandise sales and ratings.
Speaking on the “What’s Your Story?” podcast, Lee explained her mindset at the time, stating she felt she had to speak up for the division.
“I was one of the first people fighting for it quite vocally. And I think when you are the first to do something, you get hurt storming the gates you know? It’s a little rougher, but I think it’s worth it because it opens a path for people to come behind you.”
Lee admitted the tweet was “feisty” but came from a practical place, noting she felt she had “nothing to lose” at that point in her career.
“I felt like change doesn’t happen unless there is sacrifice. You have to be willing to lose everything to get what you want… And so I felt like that was worth it, and whatever backlash it was gonna be. But I thought you were cool after.”
