WWE Hall of Famer Bret “The Hitman” Hart has offered a controversial and startling new perspective on the infamous 1997 Montreal Screwjob. During a recent appearance on the “Johnny I Pro Show” in Montreal, Hart suggested that the tension and favoritism of the era stemmed from a romantic relationship between Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels.
Hart recalled the backstage atmosphere leading up to the event, specifically questioning the legitimacy of Michaels’s knee injury and “losing his smile” promo.
“I remember watching it and going, ‘I think there’s more going on here between these two guys.’ Honestly… I suspected and now I really have serious — I think that Shawn and Vince were sleeping with each other.”
Hart further elaborated, framing his departure from the company in a new light.
“I’m just telling you, I think I’m very close to the truth here that Shawn and Vince were lovers… when I look back, it’s like, I got caught between two lovers. And I got shafted and screwed over. And Shawn was so envious and jealous of my position that he finally had to sleep with Vince to get it.”
