t has been a long road to recovery for House of Black member Buddy Matthews, and the destination is still not in sight.
Matthews has been out of action since February 2025, when he suffered a severe ankle injury during a match against Kazuchika Okada at AEW Grand Slam Australia. He underwent surgery in the summer to repair the damage, but complications have seemingly delayed his return.
In a recent Q&A session on his Instagram story, Matthews provided a sobering update for fans asking when he might get back in the ring. He revealed that he is dealing with lingering nerve issues.
“It’s been a long process! Still having nerve issues with a lot of numbness! But accepted that it’s gonna take time. Really thought I’d have returned to the ring by now, but can only control what I can!”
The extended absence of Matthews has left a void in the House of Black, which has continued to operate as a trio with Malakai Black, Brody King, and Julia Hart. There is currently no official timetable for his return.
Matthews’ injury highlights the physical toll of the “Continental Championship” style matches, as his bout with Okada was a hard-hitting affair that ultimately cost him nearly a year of his career. Fans will have to wait until at least 2026 to see the powerhouse return to the squared circle.
