Anthony Bowens is proud to be a trailblazer in professional wrestling.
In an interview with the Phoenix New Times, the AEW star discussed the evolution of LGBTQIA+ representation in the industry. Bowens admitted that early in his career, the landscape was very different, leading him to hide his sexuality.
“The industry was very different then [in 2012] in terms of acceptance… That was a big reason — not the only reason, but a big one — why I stayed in the closet longer. I didn’t know how coming out would affect my career,” Bowens said.
He credited the environment at AEW for helping him feel secure enough to be himself. Bowens recalled seeing other openly queer performers like Nyla Rose and Sonny Kiss when he first arrived as an extra.
“I felt comfortable right away. It felt like a place where I didn’t have to watch what I said, hide my personal life, or look over my shoulder,” he said.
Now, as one of the few openly gay male wrestlers on national television, Bowens hopes to inspire the next generation. “Hopefully, I’m helping lead the charge in opening doors for more LGBTQ athletes and creating positive representation in professional wrestling.”
