John Cena has dropped a bombshell regarding his SummerSlam 2021 main event against Roman Reigns. Speaking on the No-Contest Wrestling podcast, Cena revealed that the original plan called for a chaotic, overbooked finish where he would have technically “won” his 17th World Title before the match was restarted.
“Everything Out the Door”
“I was going to win 17. We were going to have someone come out and restart the match… No rules, no nothing. Tons of finishers because I was going to win,” Cena explained. However, the surprise return of Brock Lesnar wasn’t secured until 5 PM that day. Once Lesnar was locked in, WWE changed course entirely.
“[Talent relations] comes and says… ‘We’re switching the finish. Roman over. Clean.'” Cena didn’t fight the change, instead pitching a simple story to Paul Heyman: “One spear. That’s it… You beat me with your finish once.” Cena noted that this change ultimately made Roman better, proving that sometimes less is more.
