The professional wrestling free agency market has gained a major new player. Following an extensive and highly successful run with New Japan Pro-Wrestling, 32-year-old David Finlay is now officially a free agent. His contract with the Japanese promotion expired last month, immediately sparking intense speculation and rumors regarding his next career destination.
WWE Contact and NJPW’s Push to Re-Sign
The fourth-generation wrestler, who is the son of legendary WWE producer Fit Finlay, has naturally drawn interest from the global juggernaut. According to a report from Fightful Select, there has indeed been contact between WWE and Finlay. However, the report clarified that despite this communication, Finlay is not currently “factored in to creative plans” on WWE television, and there have been no major updates between the two sides recently.
Simultaneously, Fightful Select noted that NJPW is actively campaigning to re-sign their former IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion. Finlay has been a cornerstone of the NJPW roster since joining the company as a Young Lion in 2015. Over his tenure, he evolved into a top-tier villain, eventually taking over leadership of the Bullet Club and establishing the ruthless War Dogs faction.
Finlay received a formal farewell from the Japanese audience at the NJPW New Beginning event in Osaka on February 10, 2026. Following a hard-fought loss to Callum Newman in what stands as his final NJPW match for the time being, Finlay paid his respects to the crowd and the promotion. With experience across the globe—including a prior appearance on AEW Dynamite against “Hangman” Adam Page—Finlay possesses the resume and pedigree to command lucrative offers from any major promotion.
