Mercedes Mone Loses CMLL World Women’s Championship to Persephone

AEW

The “CEO” of professional wrestling is returning home with one less championship in her possession. Mercedes Mone officially lost the CMLL World Women’s Championship to the rising star Persephone during a massive event in Mexico City on Friday night.

A Clean Pinfall Concludes a Grueling Main Event

The title change served as the main event for CMLL’s historic La Noche de la Amazonas, an exclusive all-women’s showcase held at the iconic Arena Mexico. The match was a grueling 18-minute and 40-second battle. Mone leaned heavily into her villainous persona, beginning the match by donning a traditional lucha mask and taunting the passionate crowd. The hostility spilled outside the ring, where fans—potentially members of Persephone’s family—doused Mone with beer.

Back inside the ring, Persephone capitalized on the chaos, executing a spectacular springboard frog splash to secure a clean pinfall victory over the global superstar. The locker room quickly emptied to celebrate the monumental win with the new champion, although reports noted she remained icy toward certain peers during the celebration.

Mone’s championship reign concludes after she originally captured the gold from Zeuxis at Grand Slam Mexico last June. She successfully defended the title three times, including a previous victory over Persephone in October. Other AEW-affiliated talent fared better on the card; Megan Bayne pinned Olympia while filling in for the injured Penelope Ford, and Mina Shirakawa secured a victory over Zeuxis.
