Former AEW star Joey Janela recently shared his perspective on how the infamous backstage altercation between CM Punk and The Elite at All Out 2022 fundamentally changed AEW President Tony Khan’s approach to running the company. Janela, who left AEW in May 2022, clarified that he has no “ill will” toward Khan, but noted that his former boss is now “more of a businessman.”
Speaking on Fightful, Janela explained that the brawl, which led to Punk’s initial suspension, was a major wake-up call for Khan.
“Well, that whole thing happened with the Punk and the fight and all that and the drama and all the bulls— and Tony’s like, ‘Alright, now I gotta be a businessman and stop getting involved in the bull****,’ you know?”
Janela, who was with AEW from the beginning, still calls the company a “great experience” and considers Khan a “good friend,” even though they haven’t spoken in a few years.
In a humorous aside, Janela did take a shot at another former employer:
“But the only company I’ll outright trash is MLW. Because Court Bauer’s a carnie f—. I’m just kidding. I love Court Bauer. No, just kidding, f— him.”
