The major announcement John Cena has been teasing for WWE Backlash is reportedly tied to the upcoming launch of Club WWE. WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select reported on Thursday night that the expectation internally is that Cena’s reveal at the show will be connected to Club WWE and its imminent rollout, with WrestleVotes describing Cena being the face of it as a huge boost for the project.
The report follows Cena’s own teaser earlier this week, in which he confirmed he would be at Backlash in Tampa on Saturday and promised “history-making news.” On Thursday, Cena posted a video from outside Benchmark International Arena, the home of the event, ramping up the build.
“WWE Universe, hey, John Cena here, standing in Thunder Alley, outside of Benchmark International Arena in Tampa Bay. In just a few days, I have a major announcement inside this building that is gonna shock the very foundation of WWE, from its fans to its superstars, from its champions down to its rookies. I’m so grateful that Tampa is allowing me a place to make this announcement. Thank you, WWE. See you live on ESPN in the States and Netflix around the world, but don’t miss Backlash. I’m so excited, and I’ll see you there.”
Cena first teased that he had something epic for Backlash in a post on April 23, before WWE officially confirmed his involvement. The Benchmark International Arena website began advertising him on May 3, with Cena himself confirming his appearance the following day.
The current Backlash card features Roman Reigns defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu, IYO SKY vs. Asuka, The Miz and Kit Wilson vs. Danhausen and a tag team partner to be determined, the John Cena announcement, Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker airing on ESPN 2, and Trick Williams defending the United States Championship against Sami Zayn airing on ESPN 2.
