Sheamus is set to leave WWE after turning down a restructured contract extension that would have reduced his pay, per Fightful Select. He was not released — his existing deal will simply expire without renewal. There is no non-compete clause. He has already been moved to WWE.com’s Alumni section and changed his social media handles to “S. Farrelly” with the bio “Pro Wrestler.”
Per one WWE source, Sheamus viewed the reduced offer as an insult given his nearly two decades with the company. Dave Meltzer described the situation as “identical to the Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods situation,” in reference to The New Day’s exit after refusing a pay cut.
Sheamus signed a deal he described as a five-year contract in 2023. The exact reason it expires sooner than 2028 is unclear.
AEW sources were surprised by the news, per Fightful. Claudio Castagnoli — Sheamus’ longtime friend and former tag team partner — is expected to push internally for the signing. However, Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Live reported that many AEW talent privately expressed hesitation. “I did talk to a lot of people today in AEW who were like, ‘Are we really gonna take this guy?'” Alvarez said, clarifying the response was about roster spot availability, not personal dislike of Sheamus.
MJF referenced Sheamus’ old independent ring name on social media, writing “Bring that smoke, O’Shaunessy” — a move widely interpreted as a recruiting gesture.
Meltzer noted Sheamus is not a business difference maker and that age (48) and injury history are factors, while acknowledging he was having quality matches when healthy.
