Paul Wight has confirmed he signed a new AEW contract and delivered his first physical in-ring segment in over a year at Beach Break on Wednesday, coming out before the broadcast to save Steve Borden Jr. — the son of Sting — and Kiran Grey from an attack by The Swirl (Blake Christian and Jay Lethal).
“Let’s thank Tony Khan because Tony Khan still sees something in me,” Wight said of his new deal on a recent interview with Joey Franchize.
Wight has been away from in-ring competition since January 2024 (a Jericho Cruise match) and from AEW television competition since November 2023. He has undergone 11 surgeries and said he has been training hard and is not ready to retire. He has previously named Kenny Omega and Darby Allin as desired opponents before he finishes his career. He also teased a return at Beach Break in a Good Day Live interview earlier Wednesday: “I’m going to be in the ring doing something. I can’t tell you what, because it’s a big secret. But if you come, you will see me maybe slap some people around.”
