Gunther could feel the heat long before the bell rang for John Cena’s final match.
Speaking on The Masked Man Show, the Ring General described the atmosphere at Saturday Night’s Main Event as noticeably different from a typical show. He noted that even his arrival at the venue felt tense.
“Already midday, when I went to the building, it felt tense. I could tell… It was very hostile when I was around them,” Gunther said.
He also commented on the surreal nature of being the one to retire Cena, a figure he admitted he “hated” during his own time away from watching the product.
“I didn’t like John Cena, I hated the guy in jorts… And yeah, it was definitely very interesting then [that I] end up to be the guy that actually takes it away at the end and causes a bunch of drama.”
Gunther revealed that after securing the submission victory, he made a quick exit.
“So when the match ended, I kind of like went backstage and disappeared. I thought it was [for] the best. ‘I created the mess and now I better leave.’”
