Joe Hendry Reflects on Failed Attempt to wrestle John Cena

During John Cena’s retirement tour, then-TNA World Champion Joe Hendry made no secret of his desire to face the WWE legend. While the dream match never materialized, Hendry opened up on Busted Open After Dark about his approach to the situation. He explained that he tried to be bold while respecting the boundaries of the business.

“I tried. I tried… It’s a tough game to play,” Hendry admitted. He referenced his viral billboard stunt in Glasgow as an example of respectful promotion. “I didn’t wanna make it about me, because it’s John Cena’s retirement tour and I was very honored to be a part of that last show.”

Hendry offered a philosophical take on missing out on the opportunity, suggesting it may have been for the best. “I’ll be completely honest with you, I said if I get that match, it’s on me. If I don’t get that match, it’s on me… Maybe if I’d just got the John Cena match, maybe that ego would have came back… Maybe I needed to not get the John Cena match to get what’s gonna come next.”
