While the conversation was a performance, Meltzer notes it was a “close replica” of the actual internal dialogue between Paul and WWE management. The reasons cited—WWE’s desire to avoid injury risks for a top superstar—are legitimate, and the staged call was designed to provide a public explanation for why the widely publicized fight with Le’Veon Bell would not be moving forward.
