Jeff Jarrett said the answer to WWE’s babyface and heel questions is not turning the top star, it is taking the time to build somebody credible to work against him.
Speaking on My World with Jeff Jarrett, Jarrett said certain acts get so far in with an audience that turning them fights the crowd rather than working with it.
“I think talent get to a certain level that they are ingrained in the audience, and the reality is not to go spit in the wind. A la John Cena, that didn’t work either,” Jarrett said. “To me, it is go build credible heels. And what does it take? Not just 20, 30 years ago, but in this day and age, I don’t think that’s changed. I think it’s patience, and you have to have that, whatever you want to call it, and you got to stay consistent, and you have to keep them apart from the top dog, and you have to build and build and build and build, and then finally, the showdown is ultimate good versus ultimate evil.”
Jarrett said his father used to solve the same problem in Memphis by taking Jerry Lawler off the road for a stretch.
“The best thing we can do is bite the bullet and Lawler, you take three or four months off and let us build some heels in here, and then you come back and kick their a–,” Jarrett said. “Punk’s over, Cody’s over as a babyface. Certainly Punk and Cody can make that babyface promo, and they’re going to believe them when they say, ‘Show up, and I’m kicking your a–.’ That kind of fundamental is never going to go away.”
