The Real Reason Scott Steiner’s 2002 WWE Return Failed

TNA

Scott Steiner has opened up about the severe injury that hampered his highly anticipated return to WWE in 2002, revealing he was suffering from drop foot that left his foot completely paralyzed.

Speaking on The Wrestling Classic interview, Steiner reflected on his comeback after WCW’s closure, which began memorably at Survivor Series 2002 and led to a high-profile feud with then-World Heavyweight Champion Triple H. However, his momentum stalled, and injuries led to his 2004 release. Steiner disclosed the extent of his physical limitations during that period.

“I wish I could have been healthy. My foot was totally paralysed, that was before I got the surgery on it,” Steiner said. “If I try to watch a match now from back in that time, I mean, I can’t even watch myself walk to the ring. Experiencing paralysis is a messed-up thing. It’s still paralysed to this day… But it’s still dead.”

He mentioned having surgery later to stabilize the foot somewhat. Steiner’s admission provides stark insight into why his WWE run didn’t meet expectations, highlighting the devastating impact the unseen injury had on his mobility and performance.

Despite the difficult WWE stint, Steiner later found success in TNA/Impact Wrestling starting in 2006, where he became a two-time World Tag Team Champion.
