A new report from Fightful Select has debunked rumors that AEW prevented Shinsuke Nakamura from being Hiroshi Tanahashi’s final opponent at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20. Tanahashi’s retirement match has since been confirmed to be against Kazuchika Okada.
While Nakamura’s name was floated internally in NJPW, it was always considered a “pipe dream”. Multiple NJPW sources confirmed that AEW never “shut down” any such plan, and no one within WWE had heard of Nakamura being approached for the match. An NJPW representative “explicitly stated” that the rumored interference from AEW “simply isn’t true”.
